About the Artist
Marian Alexopoulos
Originally from Suffolk, England, my early love of art led me to enter Art School in Cambridge and then on to obtain a Bachelor of Education from Leicester University. I taught in London before moving to Australia in the seventies, and was employed as an art teacher and Art Advisor with the Victorian Education Department.
During a period of Family Leave, I did some free-lance illustration work, pursued ceramics briefly, and published a book of poems with a Literature Grant.
Frequent travel opportunities in Australia and overseas kindled the artist within and inspired me to focus on a creative life for myself.
For fifteen years I have been working in my Macedon studio, exhibiting and selling my work locally. I am a founding member of the Macedon Ranges Arts Collective and have been a participant in the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Open Studios program since its inception.
My main artistic interest lies in the field of mixed media, and I love to creat abstract works rich in colour and texture. I use acrylic and collage materials, inks and other drawing media. The road to abstraction is a natural progression for my expressionist leanings. I love the plunge into the unknown and the instinctive search for resolution that is inherent in abstract work.
I have also been exploring both hot and cold wax techniques: developing the exciting process of encaustic (applying and fusing layers of molton beeswax to a surface) and alternatively, combining delicious cold wax medium with oil paint, a layering process rich in texture.
